英语作文 篇1

afternoon was mrs. conroys favorite time of day. after a hard day at work, her eyes were tired and her feet hurt. she enjoyed the nice long nap she took on the bus. mrs. conroy had made friends with the bus driver, mr. angstrom. he always woke her up before her stop. she usually felt fresh as a daisy when she got off the bus.

but today was different. mr. angstrom wasnt driving. a small man in a wrinkled uniform sat in the drivers seat.

"wheres mr. angstrom?" asked mrs. conroy, dropping her money into the bo.

"i dont know. sick, i guess. i just work here, lady. step to the rear."

mrs. conroy hoped that mr. angstrom was all right. she didnt like this new driver. she decided not to sleep on the way home today. she didnt want to ask this driver to wake her. he didnt look like the type whod want to do anyone a favor.

mrs. conroy looked out the window. it was a warm afternoon. though she tried to keep her eyes open, the gentle rocking of the bus had a lulling effect. within a few minutes her eyes closed. her head dropped to her shoulders. in spite of herself, mrs. conroy fell fast asleep.

the net thing mrs. conroy knew, a hand was on her shoulder. someone was shaking her awake.

"wake up, lady. weve come to the end of the line. wake up."

mrs. conroy blinked and opened her eyes. the bus driver looked down at her. "i said, this is the end of the line, lady. time to get off the bus."

mrs. conroy peered out the window. "where am i?" she asked. "i was supposed to get off at esse avenue."

"youre at the last stop, lady. come on, get off the bus. i have a schedule to keep to."

mrs. conroy was having trouble waking up. she staggered to her feet. the bus driver took her arm and helped her down the aisle. as she stepped off the bus, she felt a sense of panic. "wait a minute," she said in a shrill voice. "this isnt esse avenue. where am i? how can i get home?"

"cool off, lady. i told you, youre at the end of the line. we all make it here sooner or later."

"but why cant i ride back with you?" she pleaded. "i have the fare!"

"sorry, lady," he said as he closed the door. "its against the rules."

mrs. conroy watched the bus disappear down the road. she looked around and tried to figure out what part of the city she was in. suddenly the sun seemed awfully bright.

mrs. conroy squinted. she didnt recognize this place. there were no trees around, no street signs, and no people. the city seemed to have ended miles back. she couldnt get her bearings. there was nothing to see in any direction. nothing at all. mrs. conroy wondered if she were still dreaming.

"are you ready, madam?"

the voice came from behind her. mrs. conroy whirled around, her heart beating rapidly.

"who? what? are you speaking to me?"

a tall, handsome man in a blue pin-striped suit stepped forward. his suit reminded her of the one that her boss, mr. burton, always wore. what was a businessman doing so far out here in the country?

the man smiled. "yes, mrs. conroy. ive come to meet you. its time to go now."

"go where? what are you talking about? and how do you know my name?" the man in the blue suit smiled.

"i know it must be very confusing, mrs. conroy. most people seem to feel that way at first. but as we go along, everything will become quite clear." he took her by the arm. "its all right," he said kindly. "just come with me."

"no! im not going anywhere with you. why should i? i dont even know who you are," mrs. conroy said. she pulled away from the man and stepped back.

the man smiled gently. "im only an assistant, mrs. conroy," he said.

"well, mr. assistant, there must be some mistake. i just fell asleep and stayed on the bus too long. then the driver made me get off. he wouldnt take me back with him! he talked some nonsense about rules. im going to call the company and report him!"

"he was just doing his job, mrs. conroy," the man said patiently.

"but he left me out here alone," mrs. conroy said. "now its getting late. i have to get home and fi dinner. what kind of bus driver refuses to take passengers?"

the man in the blue suit stepped toward mrs. conroy and took her arm again. this time she didnt resist. he patted her hand and smiled down at her. "youll have to forgive the driver for being rude, mrs. conroy. hes new at the job. but he was only following orders. you see, mrs. conroy, this is the end of the line. you dont have to worry about getting home and fiing dinner.our passengers only go one way."

英语作文 篇2

Archaeology is a source of history, not just a bumble auxiliary discipline. Archaeological data are historical documents in their own right, not mere illustrations to written texts, Just as much as any other historian, an archaeologist studies and tries to reconstitute the process that has created the human world in which we live - and us ourselves in so far as we are each creatures of our age and social environment. Archaeological data are all changes in the material world resulting from human action or, more succinctly, the fossilized results of human behavior. The sum total of these constitutes what may be called the archaeological record. This record exhibits certain peculiarities and deficiencies the consequences of which produce a rather superficial contrast between archaeological history and the more familiar kind based upon written records.

Not all human behavior fossilizes. The words I utter and you hear as vibrations in the air are certainly human changes in the material world and may be of great historical significance. Yet they leave no sort of trace in the archaeological records unless they are captured by a dictaphone or written down by a clerk. The movement of troops on the battlefield may "change the course of history," but this is equally ephemeral from the archaeologist's standpoint. What is perhaps worse, most organic materials are perishable. Everything made of wood, hide, wool, linen, grass, hair, and similar materials will decay and vanish in dust in a few years or centuries, save under very exceptional conditions. In a relatively brief period the archaeological record is reduce to mere scraps of stone, bone, glass, metal, and earthenware. Still modern archaeology, by applying appropriate techniques and comparative methods, aided by a few lucky finds from peat-bogs, deserts, and frozen soils, is able to fill up a good deal of the gap.

英语作文 篇4

i remember my brother as a sweet baby, bringing much fun and delight to the family with his pleasant gabbles of nonsense. he was a very likable chubby little thing, always on his feet climbing up and down, chasing after insects, birds, and me.

i do not recall him ever having any white clothes since he started school. he was extremely untidy, he used to come home with a face of smudges, an inkspattered shirt, a pair of dirt-bedraggled pants.

he did not care much for ready-made toys, and was very anxious to break them into bits, to satisfy his childish curiosity. but he treasured his sell-made toys, such as the slingshots which he used to break the glasses on the windows, and had receivedpunishments time and time again.

Australia is one of the famous Oceanian country. The country is famous for its wool production and seashore tour. As the climate there is warm and comfortable, many people spend vocations there every year. I’m a super fan of water entertainment, so I choose it as my destination. In Australia, the sky is bluer than blue, the clouds are whiter than white, all the local people enjoy an optimistic and active life. They also show their kindness and enthusiasm to the tourists. The first step should be Sydney Opera which is among the most brilliant and splendid architectures in the world. Many world-class plays are put on in it .The surface and shape of it is like a seashell with glory decorations inside. Then Melbourne is a good choice to be as the next step. In Melbourne, skin screen is a must to take with as the sunshine is upset and may burn your skin. The most attractive thing to me is the Australia Open, which is one of the biggest world-class tennis competition. Many great players such as Roddick Federer and its local player Hewitt etc. gather to compete. It’s really a feast for the eyes.Australia is also home to one of the most challenging and exciting surfing and diving projects.
